DVR Video Compression: Hardware Compression vs. Software Compression
PC-based have become the choice for surveillance system integrators and users due to their higher scalability, flexibility and ease of customization. However, choosing a hardware compression system or software compression system can make a big difference.
PC-based appeal to system integrators and users because of their unique flexibility and scalability. By adding more compression cards, the system can support more video channels, and desired functionality can be achieved by adding daughter boards. In addition, the provided SDK allows the DVR system to be customized to meet specific requirements. A PC-based DVR system captures surveillance video in real-time and saves it to your hard drive. To do this, it has to gather the signal, and compress it, and save it to a video file on your drive. Every card captures a certain number of frames per channel (for example, a 16-channel card that captures 100 frames per second in total, captures 6.25 per channel, whereas one that captures 400 fps, can capture 25 per channel). Then, the system must compress it and save it. Either using a software process, or the DVR card itself does it.
It’s important to note that a PC-based DVR system can be made using either a software compression card or a . As the name suggests a software compression system (SCS) uses the card to capture the signal, and software to compress it. It’s your computer’s CPU and RAM that do this work, which comes at a high cost of your system resources.

A hardware compression system (HCS) not only uses the card to capture the signal, but will also compress it. It will have one or more chipsets on the card that are responsible for capturing, compressing and saving the video to the hard drive.
The biggest problem of software compression DVR system is CPU Loading. This means that your computer’s CPU, already busy with other things, is being heavily used by the DVR system. This may not be a problem with DVR systems running at a lower frame rate, but with faster, real-time systems, where the processor has 400 4CIF images to compress every second, the CPU can quickly max out. Why is it a problem? There are several reasons.
First, not all frames are the same size, nor they do not all require the same amount of work to process, which means the workload varies constantly regardless of the compression codec being used. Also, the CPU is busy processing other things like GUI (graphic user interface) changes, playback functions, motion detection and network operation, to name just a few. With the CPU under such heavy use, several large frames in a row can cause serious problems.
With the normal operation of your PC you see this all the time. One process simply waits its turn at the CPU, so you’ll see a window take extra long to redraw, or the screen will take longer to refresh. This is not normally a problem. But with DVR operation, such ‘traffic jams’ are bad news. At 400 frames per second (4CIF resolution), you computer gets overloaded pretty quickly and starts to drop frames. Frame drop means gaps or ‘blips’ in your recorded video and audio artifacts. You may not notice occasional drops, but if your CPU drops more than a few, you will see it. In severe cases these traffic jams can cause your computer to crash completely.
Because a hardware compression DVR system uses its own chips for compression, the load on the computer’s CPU and RAM is a great deal lower; frame drops almost never occur on these systems.
A hardware compression system has one or more chipsets on the card that are responsible for capturing, compressing and saving the video to the hard drive. This means it has good performance coupled with low PC CPU and RAM resource requirements . For this reason a hardware compression DVR system is far more stable than software compression .
And because hardware compression cards usually use high performance chipsets to compress frames, the compression process will not be affected or interrupted by other programs. It brings more fluid video image to customers. “Even, a DSP from Ti, and a DSP from normal supplier, the hardware compression have much more different on video quality.” Said Engineer David. As DVR market, DVR base on Ti DSP is a little expensive than normal DSP chipsets.
Meanwhile, with a low CPU occupancy rate, hardware compression system can easily accomplish additional functions by using spare system resources of computer, such as intelligent analysis, license plate recognition and so on. Network connection performance can be better as well, in particular fast transmit speed and multi-channel simultaneous connection.

If your one of those people still clinging to the past in hopes that your surveillance VCR will last you the next decade. You need to really look at the market and realize it may be more costly to continue that route than it would be to just upgrade to a DVR (Digital Video Recorder). Your old time lapse VCR has served you well in the past and its been a solid companion, but like your grandparents old manual blade lawnmower its past its prime.
To begin lets take a look at our old friend the VCR and its downfalls. A time lapse VCR was quite a handy recorder for your surveillance system there is no doubt, but with issues such as tapes, lack of features, and shorter recording capabilities it is quite a outdated technology when put up against a DVR.
Lets address the first downfall and that’s the need for a large supply of cassette tapes. When you had a large surveillance system it wasn’t uncommon for people to have to buy mass quantities of VHS tapes just to keep all of their recorded footage together. This could be a very problematic situation especially when you had to consider the room necessary for storage of the tapes, the fact that they could very easily be damaged resulting in loss of footage, and the time lost having to change the tapes rather often. Now if you only had a small system with a few cameras you may be thinking to yourself that storage was never a problem, and this may be true; however the other problems with VHS tapes were still very prevalent to almost all VCR equipped surveillance systems. On the flip side of things however with a DVR most of these problems were eliminated. A DVR uses a hard drive instead of tapes thus making the need for multiple storage mediums beyond backing the footage up moot. A hard drive is also much less susceptible to damage as a VHS would be; such as dust and improper care via storing the tape since a hard drive is contained within the DVR itself.

Second on the list of VCR pitfalls is the most prevalent of them all, and yet the easiest to sum up; the feature differential. A DVR by far has a wide and superior list of features to enhance your surveillance equipment and recording capabilities. From motion activated recording to time out buffers and remote viewing capabilities a DVR has a long list of features. Now this is not to say that a time lapse VCR didn’t include some of these features as well, but in comparison it was a much shorter list. For example if you wanted to view your surveillance system on your smart phone while remotely accessing it from 3 states over, and all you have is a VCR; well you might as well stick your feet through your car and drive home Flintstones style, because it isn’t going to work. In fact beyond just the features aspect the DVR was also able to help in the elimination of different cctv accessories such as quads and multiplexers which were needed when using VCR technology.
The final downfall faced by a VCR surveillance system is storage. Lets face it as each month goes by our technology gets smaller and smaller and yet stores more and more information. This is no less true in the surveillance world when it comes to DVR’s. Every year we see larger hard drive capacities that can enable some DVR’s to record months of surveillance footage on end without even filling the hard drive to maximum capacity; a VCR couldn’t even comprehend this amount of storage.
Now that we’ve dogged on VCR’s for a while lets give them a little boost of confidence. Simply put a VCR is a very simple piece of technology to use, and for some this is still a very attractive quality. People with very little technical know how can still easily operate this piece of equipment as it is rather straight forward to use. A DVR on the other hand can be quite a world of difference with their large array of options and features, and to some people this is a daunting task to undertake. Furthermore there is the price differential; a VCR is quite an inexpensive piece of technology now that it is mostly obsolete, but lets not be fooled. As time goes on DVR’s are becoming rapidly cheaper for the more basic models and the difference in price isn’t as great as it used to be.
In the end DVR’s are the future of surveillance recording for the time being; however this doesn’t mean you have to throw away your perfectly good VCR’s for a DVR enhancement just yet; no fiscal responsibility is still very respected and encouraged. If you are in the market for a new surveillance recorder however it may be a good time to look into the DVR market and step into the future.

Otherwise, go with what works within your budget and the overall look you prefer for your home theater viewing.
Sound is another important component of most home theater systems. The amount you spend on your sound system should depend entirely on how much sound impacts your enjoyment of movies. You can spend a lot of money on a good set of speakers and sound system or you can seriously cut costs by spending less on this particular component. Everything when it comes to building a home theater depends entirely upon your personal preferences and the overall system you wish to build.
In order to get the greatest benefit from your speakers you will need a receiver in order to process the sounds and present them in the best possible light. The receiver basically receives information from all manner of devices and sends the signal where you tell it to go. Your receiver is one place that most people tend to spend a good portion of their budget and with good reason. This is by far one of the most important components and one that many people do not already own.
Your DVD/DVR is another thing that can impact your viewing experience. You shouldn’t opt for a high definition DVD or DVR unless you have a high definition television and only then if you plan to purchase high definition DVDs rather than the regular DVDs you will find on the market at the moment. Doing so will only result in a waste of money while the technology is new. Instead, wait a year or two until the prices drop and upgrade slowly rather than buying the top of the line most expensive component that the remainder of your system cannot keep up with.
While this list is by no means exhaustive of everything you might wish to include in your home theater system it will provide a good start for most home theaters. Only you can set your budget and decide how much you are willing to spend on each individual component. My best advice is to start with a receiver and build your system one component at a time around your receiver.
